However, even though the papillon history goes back hundreds of years this breed only became popular in the United States in the early 1930's. The papillon has a long silky coat with a slight wave. An interesting characteristic of the papillon is that they carry their tails up over their backs like squirrels do. They are very intelligent, friendly, and possessive of their owners.
